For those of you who haven't met my

family       yet, you're in for a treat!

Miguel is my BFF, and the funniest 15-year-old on the block. It’s always a wild ride anytime we hang out...which is often since we're only a few blocks away! My favorite thing about Miggy is how much he cares about his friends. One time at school, I ripped my pants and he gave me his extra gym shorts. His parents are my second family- whenever I go over they make me homemade Colombian arepas from their family recipe!

Javi is my older cousin who lives in Atlanta. He is an incredible musician and dreams that one day he’ll be scoring for the movies. Our Latinx John Williams. When I was younger he used to sneak me into R-rated films. He said he wanted to show me cinema not entertainment. I also love how involved he is with activist groups that will help fight against climate change. He is always an inspiration to me.

Abuela Gloria is the best abuela a girl could ask for. She is fun and has always motivated me to do my best in school because she says knowledge is power and opportunity. She’s back in Texas now, but my best memories with her are when she lived in New York with us and used to walk me to and from school. She used to buy us a little candy or popsicle if it was hot on our way back home and I’d tell her all about my day.

Isabela is the older sister I never had but the aunt I always wanted! She’s always made me feel like I could change the world even when I was just a kid. We have the best time when Mami lets me fly down to Miami to visit her and she takes me to the incredible Perez Art Museum or to hang out at the beach. She was the one who took me to the Womens’ March in DC a few years back. Although we don’t always agree on everything, we listen to each other’s opinions and respect them.

My mami is my rock. Because it's only us two since my dad died three years ago, she’s my one and only and I know I can count on her no matter what. She can be a bit strict, but she’s super loving and helpful and a great cook! She’s also a hardworking healthcare environmental facilities aide, and a Zumba-lover since she joined the Y… She’s hilarious when her songs come on and starts doing the workout moves she’s learned!
